Looking Back on 50 Episodes

Apr 21, 2025 | 2025, Core Issues, Democracy Dispatch, General, Legislative Session | 0 comments

At the start of the 2023 legislative session, VCV launched the Democracy Dispatch podcast to accompany its weekly emails that recapped the state house updates to our members. Frankly, I was new in my role and not fully confident I could communicate about the work we were doing quite yet. In order to educate our members, I needed to educate myself, and I could achieve both things at the same time by interviewing advocates and legislators.

And here we are 50 episodes later. To commemorate the milestone, I enlisted the help of our climate action organizer, Evelyn Seidner, to lead the conversation in a retrospective manner. The mic gets turned around as I answer questions (including a few submitted by listeners like you) that reflect on the journey of the podcast so far, highlighting favorite conversations, memorable guests, and what keeps me motivated week after week.

We talk about the origins of the “Champs & Chumps” segment, lessons learned from lawmakers, and the ongoing need for accountability and education in Vermont politics. I share my hopes for the podcast’s impact, the challenges of staying hopeful in heavy moments, and which episodes really stand out – like the deep dives into accessibility, generational gaps in governance, identity in public service, and organizing for democracy.

Plus: Who would I love to interview next? Which Vermont political figures have shaped my path? And what’s the one place in Vermont I hold most dear? Tune in to the latest episode to find out and help us celebrate 50 conversations that uplift democracy, transparency, and meaningful public service.

As always, thanks for listening,

Justin Marsh, Political Director
