There was a lot on the line this election. Donald Trump has repeatedly pledged to roll back a wide range of protections for our environment, our democracy, and our liberties. And now, a week later, we are collectively processing the potential tidal wave of changes coming to the federal government. But we are committed more than ever to working to ensure Vermont remains a refuge of our shared values of environmental protection, community solidarity, and a healthy democracy.

We also wanted to share some reflections on the state and local elections. This year, 75% of VCV-endorsed candidates won their elections, electing pro-environment majorities to both the Vermont House and Senate. At the same time, both chambers lost their previously-held supermajorities of pro-environment leaders. While many great allies won their races, we also saw some great environmental leaders lose their seats on election night.

We know that some candidates here in Vermont chose to tap into the same atmosphere of anger and fear that contributed to a Trump win nationally. Governor Scott also worked harder and spent more money than ever before to help elect a number of legislators that ran on platforms opposing key VCV priorities. Many of these candidates were also buoyed by a troubling influx of Big Oil money that spread disinformation to scare voters. These are concerning trends in our local politics that make it all the more urgent that we remain clear-eyed about the threats we are facing.

To help chart a different path forward, we are committed to furthering policy solutions that address Vermonters’ very real concerns about the cost of living, while continuing to recognize the urgency of issues like the climate crisis. We stand ready to work with Vermonters to find solutions and work together collaboratively. Despite a national political environment of anger and division, here at VCV, we are ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with our fellow Vermonters, even when we disagree and times are tough. Our communities, our compassion, and our work toward meaningful solutions to the problems we face are what will get us through the challenging times ahead.

Take care of yourself and each other. We’ll be here fighting by your side for a better Vermont and a brighter future.
