We wrote to express gratitude for their leadership in crating critical emergency response measures to the public health, social, and economic cities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We also provided recommendations for how we can shape the emergency response and recovery measures that simultaneously address some of the other pressing challenges we face, including climate change and inequities embedded in our current systems.
We also urged them to fight any rollbacks to laws and regulations designed to protect our public health and natural resources. As communities suffer through the impacts of the coronavirus, allowing increased pollution – which often exacerbates social and racial inequality – is exactly the wrong response to this crisis.
